The audit was conducted between 10 and 29 March 2022.

Objective

The objective of the audit was to assess how Equinor, together with the drilling contractor, ensures compliance with the authorities’ requirements in respect of the management of barriers at Kvitebjørn. We monitored that Equinor has established systems for ensuring necessary well control competence and the integrity of well control equipment on board, such that a well control incident can be handled safely and effectively.

We also monitored that the safety strategy was up to date and that, on the basis of this work, and through instruction, training and exercises, personnel were made capable of handling well and well control incidents at Kvitebjørn.

Result

The audit identified four non-conformities. These comprised:

  • Practice of overhauling and recertifying pressure control equipment
  • Barrier management
  • Training and verification of performance requirements for operational and organisational barrier elements
  • Follow-up

In addition, we observed two matters that we have chosen to categorise as improvement points. These comprised:

  • Training in and practising at stripping the drill string through the BOP
  • Evacuation routes

What happens now?

We have asked Equinor to report by 4 June 2022 on how the non-conformities will be addressed and for their assessment of the improvement points observed.
