PSA to investigate incident on Melkøya

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has decided to initiate an investigation following an incident that occurred on Melkøya near Hammerfest on 30 January. A concrete wall fell over and damaged an acetylene tank - with resulting danger of explosion. There was a substantial potential for serious injury to persons in the area.

The incident occurred at approximately 17.30 hours on Tuesday, and entailed evacuation of the entire Melkøya facility. The potentially explosive tank was dumped into the sea for cooling at around 23.00 hours.

There were no injuries, and the evacuation of the area proceeded without problems.

There will be two people on the PSA's investigation team, which will travel to Melkøya as soon as possible.

Statoil, operator of Melkøya, has also implemented an internal investigation of the incident.
