Background for the audit

Storting White Paper No. 12 addresses topics such as major accidents. The PSA has now initiated a series of activities in the area of drilling and wells in order to motivate and se how the industry is working to avoid major accidents.

Similar audits have been conducted with several drilling contractors and operating companies in recent years.

Purpose of the audit

The purpose of the audit was to obtain an overview of the company's management system to safeguard well safety in the ongoing activity, as well as to verify compliance with relevant regulatory and internal company requirements in this area.

Result of the audit

During the audit, we revealed nonconformities related to the Scope of Work for complete overhaul of the well control equipment.

We also identified potential for improvement as regards the following factors:

  • Knowledge of the nonconformity system.

  • Follow-up of supplier.

  • Well control training.

  • Use of brand supplier's specifications.

  • Testing of pressure control equipment.

  • Control of mud volume.

In previous audits of Stena, we have found significant deficiencies as regards implementation of the company's management system. We noted in this audit that there is still deficient knowledge as regards parts of the company's own management system among members of the rig management, and also to some extent in the land organization.
